Dipsea Season is Here!

Dear Reader,

Happy end of summer!!!

While summer coming to a close may sound like a bit of a let-down, I can assure you that here at ZBC and in our community in general, September is the beginning of our most exciting time as it brings the ANNUAL DIPSEA HIKE! Coming up on the Saturday morning of the 28th, we are going to have such a fantastic time as we convene at the Old Mill Park to hike the Dipsea Trail. Here is more information on the hike. Register by September 22nd.

In this newsletter, we have several pieces for the Latinx community, including an announcement of the Spanish section of our website and information about our partnership with Ysabel Durón, founder of The Latina Cancer Institute. ZBC is making tremendous strides working in the Latinx community, partnering on issues related to early intervention and prevention. Our partnership with Ysabel, a cancer survivor herself, is one way we are able to take the work we are doing and expand its reach. We are so proud to have community friends like Ysabel and her organization.

In last month’s newsletter, I highlighted Anne-Marie Hartwig as our team member who has contributed so very much through the years. I’m thrilled to announce that Anne has accepted a permanent position here at ZBC as our Deputy Director. I simply don’t know what I would do without her, and I am so grateful she is now a full colleague. Congrats and thank you for all your efforts on behalf of ZBC, Anne!

In other news, we are creating the newsletter quarterly moving forward. This will allow us to have a focus for each quarter and include articles from guest contributors, as well as other new bits of information. Our team is excited about the new direction, and I believe you will be too!

That said, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we will surely be sending out email blasts with vital information for every phase of life and how new research and advocating for your own health is the best approach for breast cancer risk reduction.

In closing, I hope to see you all on the 28th!

Introducing Spanish Section of ZBC's Website!

Zero Breast Cancer has published materials in Spanish for over a decade and now there is a simple way to access them all together!

For the past 8 months, we have increased our Spanish-language content. In addition to the previously-announced La nueva pubertad eGuide, videos, resources and book review, you can now find newly-translated content: a materials request form, context for our breast cancer risk reduction materials, app recommendations, and The New Puberty book review.

As we continue to create Spanish-language content, it will all be available and easy to locate here. You can find the page at zerobreastcancer.org/es, through the ZBC Serves drop-down menu, and on the menu bar to the left of “DONATE.” Check it out here!

Food, Health, and Decisions Blog Series Part 2:
Obesity Is a Systemic Failure

Partnering to Reduce Latina Cancer Burden:
The Latino Cancer Institute's September 20th Event

As part of our focus on educating and empowering underserved communities, ZBC has worked with Ysabel Durón, cancer survivor and advocate, for many years. We are proud to continue our collaboration with her new organization, The Latino Cancer Institute (TLCI). On September 20th, ZBC Program Director Catherine Thomsen will present on our regional breast cancer survivorship work at TLCI’s Inaugural Forum “Reports from the Field.”

TLCI seeks to provide a support network and a voice for agencies engaged in cancer advocacy, research and care that impact Latinos touched by this disease. Ysabel was involved in the Breast Cancer Survivorship Navigation Project that ZBC facilitated. Through her new organization, we have already worked on two projects together: 1) conducting focus groups in San Francisco and Oakland on George Washington Cancer Institute’s (GWCI) Improving Quality Cancer Survivorship Care Toolkit and 2) ensuring a robust Spanish-language translation of GWCI’s Guide for Patient Navigators for monolingual and bilingual community health workers and others serving Latinos with cancer.

We look forward to further collaboration with TLCI. As partners, we will continue striving to improve cancer risk reduction and cancer survivorship for Latinos.
